The Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union equipped its regional office in Kenema with 12 solar panels, a 12 KVA inverter, a 15-kilowatt battery and office equipment. The equipment is intended to strengthen services to teachers in the east of the country, according to national president Ibrahim Bankapoma Kargbo.
The Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU), Sierra Leone’s national teachers’ union, provided equipment to its regional office in Kenema to strengthen its operational capacity, its national president Ibrahim Bankapoma Kargbo said. The equipment includes 12 solar panels, a 12 KVA inverter, a 15-kilowatt battery, a photocopier, printers, a scanner and a projector.
The provision of the equipment is part of the SLTU’s 2023-2026 strategic plan. It follows an assessment of regional offices conducted by the Chief Trustee to identify their operational needs, according to Kargbo.
The SLTU president also said that the union had secured a 45% increase in teachers’ salaries between 2023 and 2025 and provided medical and educational assistance, disaster relief, affordable loans and professional identification cards. The Kenema regional office pledged to ensure the proper use and management of the equipment.
The National Council of Head Teachers in Sierra Leone (NaCoHT), which represents school heads, and other stakeholders also called for the creation of local union subsections in the Eastern Region to be accelerated. Kargbo rejected accusations that he was seeking to divide the SLTU into regional structures, saying he wanted members to elect competent leaders.
