The government of Jigawa State and the Islamic Development Bank are preparing a $110 million education project for Jigawa and two other Nigerian states. The SMART project includes the construction of schools, rehabilitation of existing facilities and the creation of water and sanitation infrastructure, according to P.M. News.
The project will also fund teacher training and measures aimed at improving learning conditions. Imtiaz Alam, head of the Islamic Development Bank’s social infrastructure team, said the mission to Jigawa aims to gather the priorities of the participating states before a complete document is submitted to the bank’s board of directors, according to P.M. News.
The proposed financing would combine development resources from the Islamic Development Bank and grants from the Global Partnership for Education. The bank is also considering mobilising additional financing from other partners, according to P.M. News.
Jigawa Governor Umar Namadi said the state had turned to the Islamic Development Bank because of its ability to finance projects and mobilise other donors for education priorities, P.M. News reports.
