Two children died in a shack fire in Greenfields, in the Kariega district of South Africa, on the evening of 5 November. Their father, who had gone out to a nearby shop, was burned on the arms as he tried to rescue them, according to South African police cited by IOL.
The fire broke out at around 5.41pm in a home on Hlubi Street. When rescuers arrived, firefighters were already on the scene, battling the flames that had engulfed the shack. The bodies of the two children were found in the debris once the fire was brought under control. Their identities have not been made public; police say they will be confirmed by DNA tests.
According to the initial findings of the investigation, the father had left the younger child asleep and the elder in front of the television, after locking the shack. Alerted to the blaze, he ran back and tried to enter the burning structure, but could not reach the children because the flames were so intense. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
Kamesh police have opened a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy and have not yet established the origin of the fire.
