The South African Weather Service has placed central and southern KwaZulu-Natal under a level 5 orange alert for rain that could cause flooding. The rainfall could damage infrastructure, homes, crops and livestock, according to the South African Weather Service.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS), South Africa’s national weather service, has issued a level 5 orange alert for disruptive rainfall in central and southern KwaZulu-Natal. The rainfall could cause flooding of roads and homes, damage infrastructure and pose a danger to people, according to SAWS.
A level 4 yellow alert also covers severe thunderstorms in northern KwaZulu-Natal, the Mpumalanga Highveld and south-central Limpopo. SAWS forecasts heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and intense electrical activity, with risks of flooding and infrastructure damage.
A level 2 yellow alert also covers eastern North West and Free State, the Mpumalanga Lowveld, the escarpment and most of Limpopo, as well as Gauteng. Another level 2 alert concerns disruptive rainfall in the south-east of the Eastern Cape, with risks of localised flooding of homes, roads and bridges.
SAWS also forecasts an extremely high fire danger in the municipalities of Nama Khoi, Kamiesberg and Hantam, in the Northern Cape, as well as those of Matzikama and Laingsburg, in the Western Cape, and in parts of Limpopo. In Johannesburg, showers and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 29°C.
