Senegal’s Ministry of Water and Sanitation says the Grand Water Transfer programme has neither been cancelled nor suspended. In a statement published on 27 October 2026, it also announced that a stage of the programme would begin soon, according to Senenews.
Senegal’s Ministry of Water and Sanitation says the Grand Water Transfer programme “has neither been cancelled nor suspended”. In a statement published on 27 October 2026, the ministry headed by Cheikh Tidiane Dièye denied that it had been removed from the state’s plans, Senenews reports.
World Bank-funded works to secure Lake Guiers, the main reservoir used for water supplies, are due to begin before the end of 2026. They include rehabilitation of the control structure at Richard Toll and embankment works near the Senegalese Sugar Company, Pakh and Bontou Bath, according to the Ministry of Water and Sanitation.
The operations are intended to increase the lake’s storage capacity and protect the water resource ahead of implementation of the main transfer. The ministry also says that budget adjustments in the 2026 supplementary finance bill do not amount to abandoning the programme.
The clarification comes after the launch of works to secure Lake Guiers, announced on 26 October, and the reallocation of 13.8 billion CFA francs for the water project, announced on 25 October.
