The African Democratic Congress, a Nigerian opposition party, has urged citizens to learn from the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections. According to its national secretary for communications, Bolaji Abdullahi, the election shows that voters can punish leaders and reaffirm that power belongs to citizens, Punch reports.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), a Nigerian political party, has urged voters to learn from the Democrats’ victory in the 2026 US midterm elections, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by its national secretary for communications, Bolaji Abdullahi, and cited by Punch. The Democratic Party took control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, which had previously been dominated by President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.
The ADC says the election shows that voters can punish leaders through the ballot box. The party urged Nigerians to prioritise their economic situation and security in the next general elections, rather than party loyalties or personalities. The ADC supports former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The statement came after Donald Trump and his vice-president, J. D. Vance, commented on the Republican defeat in the United States, with J. D. Vance’s explanations published on 4 November. On 3 November, the ADC had also denounced a plan to disrupt its candidate Atiku Abubakar’s rally in Sokoto.
