Atiku Abubakar says protesters are being mobilised to disrupt the African Democratic Congress’s campaign rally in Sokoto. The former vice-president also accuses security services and the state government of trying to stop the party campaigning ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to Daily Trust.
Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president of Nigeria and presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accused officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday of planning protests to disrupt his party’s campaign rally in Sokoto. He made the allegations at a press conference in Abuja, according to Daily Trust.
Atiku said protesters had gathered near an office behind a Zenith Bank branch on Koko Road, and that trucks had been sent to strategic locations. He also accused the Sokoto State Government of obstructing the ADC’s preparations by blocking access to public facilities and withholding logistical support. The protests could lead to a curfew and prevent the party from holding its planned rally, he said.
Atiku called on security forces not to take part in a political mobilisation. He also accused President Bola Tinubu and his administration of shrinking the opposition’s political space, linking the allegations to the prospect of the 2027 general elections.
The statements come as the ADC has pressed ahead with its campaign in Sokoto despite alleged attacks reported on 2 November. The party had previously postponed the campaign to 4 November, as stated in its announcement of 29 October.
