Israel: Netanyahu calls for national unity around Eisenkot

Benjamin Netanyahu, Likud leader and outgoing Israeli prime minister, has called for a national unity government around Gadi Eisenkot, tasked with forming the next government. The statement comes after President Isaac Herzog decided to entrust Eisenkot with the task, according to Linfodrome.

Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister and Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu has called for a national unity government around Gadi Eisenkot, tasked with forming the next Israeli government. His call comes as President Isaac Herzog is due to officially entrust Eisenkot with the task of forming the government on Sunday 8 November 2026, reports L’Infodrome.

In a video address broadcast after Shabbat, Netanyahu called for national unity as the Israeli presidency had announced on 6 November the forthcoming appointment of Eisenkot. Likud is the party led by Netanyahu.

Herzog began consultations to form the government on 4 November, before Eisenkot became the favourite for the task on 5 November. Eisenkot’s appointment was then announced on 7 November, after Likud MPs called on him to join his political team.
