Santiago Peña placed in pre-trial detention in Paraguay

Former Paraguayan president Santiago Peña was placed in pre-trial detention after being charged in connection with the collapse of Ueno Bank, according to Judge Hernan Otazu. Peña is to be held at a military facility of the presidential guard in Asuncion after being placed under house arrest, AFP reports.

Paraguayan judge Hernan Otazu ordered the pre-trial detention of Santiago Peña, the ousted president of Paraguay, after he was charged in the case linked to the collapse of Ueno Bank. “He is subject to pre-trial detention,” the magistrate told the press on Saturday in Asuncion.

Santiago Peña is to be held at a military facility of the presidential guard, where he had been transferred on Friday evening for security reasons. He was initially placed under house arrest before the transfer, according to Judge Hernan Otazu.

The measure follows Santiago Peña’s resignation, announced on 5 November amid the Ueno Bank crisis, followed by the Paraguayan Congress’s rejection of the resignation. Pedro Alliana, Paraguay’s former vice-president, assumed the presidency after Peña’s removal, according to events reported on 6 and 7 November.
