Four Pakistani nationals who arrived from Uganda were arrested in Nobili, in Beni territory, and then transferred to Beni for further questioning, according to Mubele Musaidizi, president of the local civil society organisation. Security services are seeking to establish their motives, route and the circumstances of their arrival in this sensitive border area.
Four Pakistani nationals from Uganda were arrested at the Nobili customs post, on the Nsungu 3 track, in the Watalinga chiefdom, North Kivu, before being transferred to Beni for further questioning. According to Mubele Musaidizi, president of the local civil society organisation, they said they had come to the region on a mission to evangelise Islam.
After their arrest, the four men were initially taken to the facilities of the Directorate General of Migration (DGM), where they were questioned. Security services are seeking to establish the motives for their travel, their route and the circumstances of their arrival. Their transfer to Beni is intended to allow investigators to continue their inquiries. Communication is complicated by their lack of knowledge of Swahili, English and Lingala, according to Mubele Musaidizi.
The Watalinga chiefdom is in a border area with Uganda that faces incursions and attacks attributed to the ADF, an armed group active in eastern DR Congo. No involvement of the four Pakistani nationals in the group's activities has been established at this stage.
