Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has ordered the disarmament of civilians in Ennedi Ouest and suspended General Hamoda Mahamat Béchir after tensions between herders. The director of the State Institutional Security Services, Tahir Erda Tahiro, is in charge of the operation, according to the Chadian presidency.
Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno tasked General Tahir Erda Tahiro, director-general of the State Institutional Security Services (DGSSIE), with disarming civilians in Ennedi Ouest. The measure aims to prevent an armed escalation between herders amid tensions over access to water and pasture, according to the Presidency of the Republic of Chad.
General Hamoda Mahamat Béchir, commander of Defence Zone No. 8 and military coordinator for Ennedi Est, was suspended from his duties after a meeting devoted to the dispute between herders. Several administrative officials were also dismissed, including the prefects of Torboul and Mourtcha and the sub-prefect of Am-Djirémé, according to the Presidency.
The measure follows the suspension of General Hamoda Mahamat Béchir announced on 7 November among security officials dismissed. It accompanies measures announced to build water infrastructure for livestock within three months in the areas concerned.
