A crash involving a vehicle in the convoy of Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago killed five people near Minna, Nigeria: four Federal University of Technology students and the driver of the official vehicle. The head-on collision happened on Monday as the convoy returned to Minna, Punch reports.
Five people died on Monday in a head-on collision at Gidan Kwanu, near Minna, between a vehicle in the convoy of Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago and a car carrying five students from the Federal University of Technology, Nigerian daily Punch reports. Four students and the driver of the official vehicle were killed at the scene.
The convoy vehicle was carrying Dauda Chikuba, director-general of Government House, who was taken to hospital. The students were travelling to Bida while the convoy was returning to Minna after a condolence visit to traditional ruler Yahaya Abubakar, according to Punch.
Niger State police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the accident and said an investigation was under way. A witness quoted by Punch said the convoy was travelling at high speed.
The accident comes after several road tragedies were reported in Nigeria in recent days, including a pile-up that killed seven people and injured 11 in Kumo on 23 October.
