Nigeria’s federal government will provide a monthly transport allowance of 70,000 naira per worker for six months, starting in November 2026, according to Vanguard and Leadership. Leadership says the measure covers public service workers at all levels and aims to ease the impact of the rising cost of living. Vanguard puts the start of payments in November or December 2026. The agreement was reached with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at a conciliation meeting held on 27 October at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, according to Vanguard.

The government has also approved payment of outstanding allowances owed to health workers, covering 19 months according to Vanguard. Leadership says the outstanding special allowances will be paid from 1 May 2026, in three equal monthly instalments starting in November. The meeting ended without agreement on when the new minimum wage would take effect, Leadership reports. The two parties agreed to set up a minimum wage negotiation committee immediately and begin its work.
