Six people died on Tuesday in a collision involving two trucks and a light delivery vehicle on the N3 toll road at Van Reenen’s Pass, in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) announced. The crash occurred at about 12:43pm between Sand River and the Pyramids hotel, according to the RTMC and concessionaire N3 Toll Concession (N3TC).
According to the RTMC’s preliminary information, one truck was travelling south towards Durban, while the light vehicle and the second truck were travelling north. The descending truck reportedly lost control before colliding head-on with the light vehicle, which was carrying workers in the rear, and then striking the other heavy vehicle on its side.
Van Reenen’s Pass was closed in both directions while emergency services worked and the vehicles were cleared. Provincial Transport MEC Siboniso Duma offered his condolences to the families, while the RTMC investigates the causes of the collision. N3TC asked motorists to postpone travelling through the area.
