Three pastors from the Bangladesh informal settlement in Mombasa were among the 24 people killed when a bus belonging to the Power of the Word International church collided with a lorry on 25 October near Kanga, in Mtito Andei, according to Tuko. The accident happened at around 7.45am on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway as the bus tried to overtake the lorry.
The victims were Joseph Vura, pastor of the Campaign for Salvation and Healing Ministry Church; Fonex Paul, apostle of the River of Restoration Church; and Isaac Juma, pastor of the Grace Healing Church. They were returning to Mombasa after attending the funeral of Reverend Kanan, a colleague from their religious community.
Twenty passengers died at the scene and four others succumbed to their injuries while receiving care. The 24 survivors were taken to hospitals in Makindu, Kibwezi and Mtito Andei. Religious leaders called on the government to provide specialist care for the seriously injured, while vigils and prayers were held in Mombasa, according to Tuko.
The death toll from the collision had already been established in the Mtito Andei crash, while survivors recounted the hurried departure on 27 October.
