Kenya plans to begin commercial crude oil production on 1 December 2026, a date designated by the government as “first oil”. The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has invited citizens, institutions and professional organisations to propose a name for Kenyan crude, Tuko reports.
Suggestions must reach the State Department for Petroleum no later than 29 October 2026. The name should represent the whole country, be easy to pronounce and remember, and not be associated with any particular county, community or company. Political, religious or potentially divisive references are excluded. The chosen name must also be capable of being registered as a trademark in Kenya and internationally.
Each proposal must include the suggested name, its meaning and justification, as well as the contact details of the person or organisation submitting it. The State Department says the name will serve as the commercial identity of Kenyan oil on cargo documents, price reports and trading platforms.
