Cape Verde’s government is keeping the maximum price of a 12.5-kilogramme butane gas bottle at 1,868 escudos in November, despite a calculated 38.8% increase. The measure, which also covers bulk sales, could be extended until December 2026, according to the Council of Ministers.

The Cape Verdean government will keep the maximum price of a 12.5-kilogramme bottle of butane gas at 1,868 escudos in November, instead of allowing it to rise above 2,100 escudos. The decision, approved by the Council of Ministers on 27 October, will prevent the calculated 38.8% increase from being passed on to consumers, according to the Cape Verdean government.

The state will cover the entire difference between the price calculated under the ordinary regime and the ceiling set for retail sales. The measure applies to bottles of all sizes as well as gas sold in bulk, which should also benefit businesses, particularly those in the catering sector.

The scheme is expected to remain in force until December 2026, unless the Council of Ministers decides otherwise, based on a technical proposal from the Multisectoral Regulatory Agency for the Economy (ARME) and a financial assessment by the Ministry of Finance. ARME still has to set and publish the final prices for other fuels: the scenarios available on 26 October foresee slight decreases for petrol and diesel, but increases are still expected for kerosene and fuel oils.

The decision extends the maintenance of the gas price in November, announced as part of measures intended to limit the impact of fuels on households.
