The Cape Verdean association A Ponte is calling for increased funding to expand free psychological support and prevention activities in the country, as it marks 25 years of work. Its president, José António dos Reis, outlined this need in an interview with Expresso das Ilhas.
Dos Reis believes the association has helped raise public awareness of mental health and supported thousands of people through consultations, conferences and educational sessions. Founded in 2000, A Ponte complemented hospital services, particularly the psychiatry department at Praia Hospital, by providing free and accessible support.
The president stressed that mental health is not limited to psychological disorders: it also includes prevention, emotional balance and the ability to cope with everyday difficulties. He cited preventing drug use as an example of action aimed at protecting psychological wellbeing.
