Burkina Faso has handed over 200 40-horsepower tractors, accompanied by ploughs and harrows, to the ministry responsible for Agriculture to strengthen mechanisation. The equipment is primarily intended for agricultural Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland, according to the National Bureau for Major Projects and Minister Ismaël Sombié.
The National Bureau for Major Projects of Burkina Faso handed over 200 40-horsepower tractors, accompanied notably by ploughs and harrows, to the ministry responsible for Agriculture on 6 November 2026. The equipment is primarily intended for agricultural Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP), as part of the Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production and Food Self-Sufficiency, Burkina 24 reports.
The Minister of State responsible for Agriculture, Commander Ismaël Sombié, said that Burkina Faso had reached a cereal needs coverage rate of 124.6% in 2025. He attributed this result to the implementation of the Presidential Initiative for Food Self-Sufficiency and the 2023-2025 Agropastoral, Water and Fisheries Offensive, extended until 2028, while stressing that mechanisation remains a challenge in reducing the hardship of rural work, according to Burkina 24.
The new allocation is intended to strengthen the agricultural resources already made available to the ministry, continuing efforts to mechanise farming operations, from soil preparation to harvesting and post-harvest activities, according to Minister Ismaël Sombié.
