The PI-SPI platform now allows Senegalese customers to transfer money directly between Wave, Orange Money, Mixx and other networks, without withdrawing and then depositing again. The change is expected to simplify interoperable transfers and alter customer practices, according to SeneNews.

PI-SPI, the WAEMU instant payment platform, now connects banks, mobile money operators and microfinance institutions to the same system to allow direct transfers from one network to another, SeneNews reports. A transfer from Wave to Orange Money can thus be made without a prior withdrawal followed by a new deposit.

Economist and lecturer at Alioune Diop University of Bambey Souleymane Astou Diagne said in an RTS report that the system ends the compartmentalisation of payment networks. She noted that transactions can now be carried out directly, resulting in faster, simpler and more traceable operations.

The system could also encourage the use of digital payments and gradually reduce reliance on cash, according to SeneNews. The question of fees charged for transfers between networks has nevertheless been raised as part of this development.

The rollout follows the nationwide deployment of the PI-SPI payment platform by BCEAO, announced on 2 November 2026.
