The government initiative is entering a commercial expansion phase, according to Ismaeel Ahmed, cited by Business Day Nigeria.
Some 170 additional compressed natural gas (CNG) stations are being developed and obtaining regulatory approvals in Nigeria, Ismaeel Ahmed, chairman and chief executive officer of the Presidential CNG Initiative and Electric Vehicles Initiative, said on Friday, as quoted by Business Day Nigeria. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has also ordered the deployment of about 500 additional infrastructure units through the MDGIF programme, he said.
The adoption of CNG-powered buses has already reduced transport fares by 30% to 40% on some routes in Abuja, Lagos and Kano, according to Ismaeel Ahmed. He cited the Kano-Katsina route in particular, where passengers now pay less than before.
The official also said Nigeria has about 12 million vehicles, while 24,000 stations distributing PMS petrol have been developed over 60 years. The new CNG stations are funded by private investors, as are most existing PMS stations, according to Business Day Nigeria.
