Burkina bans DengueMed, an unauthorised dengue treatment

The Faso Food and Drug Administration has banned the sale, prescription and use of DengueMed, presented as a dengue treatment, for lacking marketing authorisation. The product has not undergone any assessment of its quality, efficacy or safety, according to the Faso FDA.

The Faso Food and Drug Administration (Faso FDA) has banned the sale, dispensing, prescription, possession for sale and use of “DengueMed”, presented as a dengue treatment, in Burkina Faso. The product has no marketing authorisation and does not appear in the national list of pharmaceutical specialties and generic medicines authorised for 2026, according to the Faso FDA.

The quality, efficacy and safety of “DengueMed” have not been assessed by a competent authority, the Faso FDA said. The measure applies to all presentations of the product, regardless of batch or supplier, and covers the entire territory of Burkina Faso.

Pharmacies, wholesalers, pharmaceutical depots and public and private health facilities must remove the product from their stocks, quarantine it and declare the quantities held and the identities of suppliers to the Faso FDA or the relevant regional health directorate. Health professionals must also stop prescribing, dispensing or recommending it, according to the health authority.

The Faso FDA announced inspections of pharmacies, pharmaceutical depots and health facilities. The stocks concerned will be recovered by inspection teams and offenders face the administrative and criminal penalties provided for under Burkinabe regulations.
