A magnitude 6.4 earthquake was recorded on 5 November 2026 near Ushirombo, in Tanzania’s Geita region. The tremor, which occurred at 11.22am and was felt for about 30 seconds, was also reported in several parts of Rwanda, according to the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB).
Residents of Mwanza in Tanzania, Kampala in Uganda and Nairobi in Kenya also said they felt the vibrations. The RMB was continuing its checks to determine whether the earthquake had caused damage, Imvaho Nshya reports.
The Geita area lies near the East African Rift system, where the Earth’s crust is gradually pulling apart. The RMB recalled that the strongest earthquake recorded in Rwanda had a magnitude of 6.6 on 20 March 1966. Rwandan authorities called on the public to follow safety instructions while geological monitoring continued.
