Flooding damaged 20 homes and displaced 45 households in Mbeya’s Nzovwe neighbourhood after heavy rain and hail on 3 November. Regional Governor Jumanne Sagini tasked Tanzania’s roads agency with assessing compensation needs, Mwananchi reports.

Flooding caused by heavy rain damaged 20 houses sheltering 45 households in the Nzovwe neighbourhood of Mbeya, Tanzania, leaving them without homes or essential services. The rain, accompanied by hail, fell for about 30 minutes on 3 November, according to Mwananchi.

The Mbeya regional government, led by Governor Jumanne Sagini, visited those affected and announced its support. Jumanne Sagini also asked Tanroads, Tanzania’s roads agency, to quickly assess residents affected by a four-lane road-widening project so that their cases could be sent to the relevant ministry for consideration of compensation, Mwananchi reports.

Flooding has repeatedly affected the Mbeya region. On 14 April 2024, houses, a school, livestock and crops were damaged in the Itezi neighbourhood, while landslides destroyed road infrastructure. On 26 March 2026, 20 people were killed and five others injured in landslides in Rungwe, according to Mwananchi.

The new flooding comes after the call made on 5 October to prepare for El Niño-related flooding. On 27 October, a Tanzanian MP had also given 1.5 million shillings to 12 affected households.
