Guinean opposition figure Aliou Bah, president of the Liberal Democratic Movement (MoDeL), has been released from the Sonfonia gendarmerie in Conakry, nearly 22 months after his arrest for insulting the head of state. His release follows the presidential pardon granted on 2 October by Mamadi Doumbouya to 217 detainees, according to Guinée360.

Aliou Bah, president of the Liberal Democratic Movement (MoDeL), regained his freedom on Friday 6 November 2026, leaving the gendarmerie compound at 6.33 pm, a well-placed source confirmed to Guinée360. The opposition figure was held at the Sonfonia gendarmerie camp, where he had been transferred.

His release is part of the presidential pardon granted on 2 October 2026 by President Mamadi Doumbouya to 217 detainees. Aliou Bah had been arrested on 26 December 2024 and then sentenced at first instance to two years' imprisonment for "insult and defamation" of the head of state through a computer system; the Conakry Court of Appeal confirmed the sentence on 2 May 2025.

This effective release ends several weeks of uncertainty over the opposition figure's place of detention after the announcement of his pardon. On 3 October, Aliou Bah had been released after nearly 22 months in detention, and MoDeL had called for calm in the wake of the presidential decision.
