The governance of the district of Bamako, led by Abdoulaye Coulibaly, is launching a plan to clear the main roads of the Malian capital. According to Mali Actu, the operation plans to clear public rights of way occupied by installations and obstacles that hamper traffic, notably on the main boulevards.
The authorities are planning several stages: identifying the most congested areas, raising awareness among occupants installed outside the regulatory framework, then clearing the roads. Regular patrols are then to prevent occupations from returning. The aim is also to facilitate the passage of ambulances and fire service vehicles, as well as to secure the movements of pedestrians deprived of accessible pavements.
Trade union representatives meanwhile recommend the creation of replacement sites and relocation measures for the traders concerned. They want the reorganisation of traffic to preserve local economic activities.
