Burkina Faso launches Sankara memorial project worth 117 billion CFA francs

Burkina Faso’s Council of Ministers has declared the project to transform the Isidore Noël Thomas Sankara Memorial to be of urgent public utility, at an estimated cost of 117 billion CFA francs. The complex planned in Ouagadougou will include an 87-metre tower, a 2,360 m² museum and a cable car to Bangr-Weogo park, with completion targeted for 2028, according to Actu Cameroun.

Burkina Faso’s Council of Ministers adopted a decree on 5 November declaring the transformation of the Isidore Noël Thomas Sankara Memorial site in Ouagadougou to be of urgent public utility, as part of a project estimated at 117 billion CFA francs, reports Actu Cameroun. The complex is to cover more than 14 hectares in sector 03 of the capital and be completed by 2028.

The project, designed by Burkinabe architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, notably provides for an 87-metre “Sankara Tower”, a height referring to the year 1987, when Thomas Sankara was assassinated. The site is also to include a 2,360 m² museum dedicated to the archives of the revolution.

The future complex will also include an urban cable car linking the memorial to Bangr-Weogo Urban Park. Funding is to rely in particular on the national effort and the popular initiative “Ma brique pour Sankara”, according to Actu Cameroun.

The project comes after Burkina Faso paid tribute to Thomas Sankara and his twelve companions on 1 October. It also forms part of a series of public investments announced recently, including the mobilisation of 67.2 billion CFA francs for 120,000 households on 24 October.
