Burkina Faso's Minister of Family and Solidarity, Pélagie Kaboré, has assured Guinean nationals living in Burkina Faso that they will neither be harassed nor face reprisals despite tensions between the two countries. She called for calm and said the government rejected any calls targeting this community, according to Guinee360.
The position comes after operations to close illegal gold-mining sites in Guinea, particularly in the Siguiri region, led to the departure of several foreign nationals, including Burkinabè. The situation prompted reactions and hostile calls targeting Guineans living in Burkina Faso.
Pélagie Kaboré said the Burkinabè government was 'neither directly nor indirectly' associated with calls for reprisals and announced measures to reassure the various communities living in the country. She also said that any participation in such acts would call into question the pan-Africanist principles defended by the Burkinabè authorities.
The minister reaffirmed that Burkina Faso intended to remain open to African nationals and called for coexistence between the different communities to be preserved despite tensions linked to the events in Guinea.
