An attack on Saturday targeting a procession of Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, killed one person and left several seriously injured. Campaign buses and tricycles were also vandalised on Nnebisi Road, near Kowen Plaza, according to the Delta State government cited by Tribune Online.
The attackers reportedly wore black clothing and masks and used dangerous weapons. The Delta government said police had advised organisers to abandon the march and hold the campaign at a designated location with security arrangements, according to a statement by Commissioner for Rural Works and Public Information Charles Aniagwu.
Charles Aniagwu asked police to investigate the circumstances of the attack and prosecute those responsible. The Delta government also warned political parties and their supporters that it would no longer tolerate attacks motivated by political considerations, according to Tribune Online.
The incident comes after an attack on a pro-Obi rally in Nigeria and Peter Obi's condemnation of a political attack in the Niger Delta.
