Former Nigerian Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says he founded ABTI Academy in 1993, six years before becoming vice-president. He is responding to President Bola Tinubu’s allegations about the source of funding for his university, in a statement relayed by his director of strategic communications.

Former Nigerian Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s criticism of the funding of his university, saying that his investments in education began before he entered government. In a statement published on Saturday by Phrank Shaibu, his director of strategic communications, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate also said that his professional career could be verified.

Bola Tinubu had asked at a presidential rally in Port Harcourt how Atiku built his university while he was Vice-President to Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007, alleging that public funds had been used to finance the institution. Atiku rejected the accusation and said that his business activities were traceable. He also accused the president of diverting attention from Nigeria’s economic difficulties by attacking his business record, while disputing Tinubu’s position on a possible return to fuel subsidies.
