Nigeria’s Bauchi State has recorded a sharp decline in the number of out-of-school children through investment in educational infrastructure and support from development partners, notably UNICEF and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). The chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Abubakar Isa Baba, made the announcement on Saturday at a meeting on improving water, sanitation and hygiene services in schools through the 5-Star approach, supported by UNICEF.
Abubakar Isa Baba attributed some of the progress to UNICEF and UBEC interventions in school infrastructure, water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. According to the SUBEB official, these programmes have included the construction of toilets, the provision of suitable classrooms for boys and girls, and the fencing of schools to strengthen their security.
The SUBEB chairman said improvements in basic education were crucial to the state’s educational goals. He said support from UNICEF, a longstanding partner in basic education programmes in Nigeria, and UBEC had helped address several challenges affecting access to and the quality of primary education in Bauchi.
