Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio says about 30 state assemblies have approved the constitutional amendment to create state police. He says the reform could bring security forces closer to communities and strengthen the fight against insecurity, according to comments reported by This Day.

About 30 Nigerian state legislative assemblies have approved the constitutional amendment to create state police, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said on Wednesday, according to ThisDay. He estimated that Nigeria could establish this decentralised system in less than a month.

Akpabio presented the reform as a way of bringing police forces closer to communities and strengthening the fight against insecurity. The creation of forces answerable to the states would complement existing security structures, he argued. The project requires an amendment to the Nigerian Constitution.

The figure announced marks an increase from the 24 assemblies that had approved the creation of state police by 23 October. The Senate had also been called on to examine the financing of the future state police.
