A stray dog interrupted a top-flight Egyptian match between Al Ahly Bank and Al Masry on Wednesday 28 October, running onto the pitch among the players. The match was temporarily stopped, Egypt Independent reported, in a translation of Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Spectators initially welcomed the scene with amusement and the images quickly circulated on social media. The incident then reignited debate about the presence of stray dogs in Egyptian cities and the safety measures needed to deal with potentially aggressive packs.
Animal rights advocates opposed calls for culling and advocated sterilisation, vaccination and humane population management campaigns. The controversy comes a few days after the death of a two-year-old girl, who was attacked by a pack near her family home in the October Gardens, according to Egypt Independent.
