Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan agreed on Wednesday 28 October to maintain close coordination to prevent new regional crises, according to Tamim Khalaf, a spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During a telephone call, they discussed developments in the regional situation and ways to reduce tensions.
The consultations are part of bilateral exchanges between Cairo and Ankara, as well as the R4 quadrilateral ministerial mechanism, which also brings together Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Badr Abdelatty called for concerted efforts to promote calm, as the region experiences alternating signs of military escalation and attempts at de-escalation, the spokesperson said.
The exchange came after Badr Abdelatty consulted the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on regional escalation on 28 October. It follows the Egyptian minister’s calls to defuse regional tensions.
