Liverpool eliminated Chelsea in the English League Cup quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw and a 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory. The match was played at Anfield on Wednesday evening, P.M. News reports.

Liverpool eliminated Chelsea in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, the English League Cup, winning 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Anfield. The Reds secured qualification on Wednesday evening, according to P.M. News.

Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute through a Morgan Rogers penalty, awarded after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Giorgi Mamardashvili. Liverpool equalised three minutes later through Cody Gakpo, after Wesley Fofana handled the ball in the London side’s penalty area. The two teams could not be separated in normal time.

The shoot-out was marked by Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili’s saves from Emmanuel Emegha and Valentin Barco’s shot hitting the post. Chelsea were eventually eliminated after misses by Barco, Emegha and Fofana, despite Liverpool missing two penalties, taken by Konstantinos Tsimikas and Gravenberch.

Liverpool had reached this round after beating Brighton in the Premier League, England’s top division, on 25 October. The club now turn to the League Cup quarter-finals, while Chelsea leave the competition, according to P.M. News.
