Twenty-two former administrative officials in Siguiri, Guinea, have been remanded in custody following their dismissal by President Mamadi Doumbouya. They are being prosecuted over alleged corruption of public officials, illicit enrichment, money laundering, environmental degradation, destruction of property and water pollution, Africaguinee.com reports.
The imprisonments come as part of the government's campaign against clandestine and unregulated gold mining in the region. The Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation also dismissed 479 neighbourhood and district chiefs, who are notably accused of facilitating illegal gold mining, degrading land and waterways and accommodating foreign nationals in an irregular situation, according to Africaguinee.com.
The judicial operation comes three days after the dismissal of 22 administrators in Siguiri, announced on 3 November, and two days after the dismissal of 22 prefects and sub-prefects over clandestine gold mining, announced on 5 November.
