Mozambique’s Zambézia province will receive 20,530 agricultural kits under the government plan to mitigate the effects of El Niño and strengthen the 2026-2027 farming season, National Irrigation Institute director Delfim Vilissa announced, according to the Mozambique Information Agency.
The programme includes 7,975 type 1 kits containing, among other items, maize, legumes, sweet potato seedlings, cassava cuttings and fertiliser, as well as 12,555 type 2 kits containing rice, legumes and pumpkin seeds. It will cover seven districts: Nicoadala, Namacurra, Maganja da Costa, Mopeia, Morrumbala, Milange and Derre.
The programme also provides for 42 irrigation kits for one-hectare plots and 5,500 multipurpose silos, each with a capacity of 500 kg. Nationwide, the government plans to distribute 185,500 agricultural kits and 100,000 silos. Forecasts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries predict below-normal rainfall in the centre and south of the country between October and December 2026, and again between January and March 2027.
