Tokenising Ghanaian government bonds and Treasury bills could make it easier for foreign investors to access the local market, according to Ebenezer Ghanney, CEO of WeWire. The approach could broaden the government's funding sources, with regulatory oversight considered essential, he said in Accra.

Tokenising Ghanaian government securities could make it easier for international investors to access Ghana's financial market and broaden the state's sources of funding, according to Ebenezer Ghanney, CEO of WeWire, cited by MyJoyOnline. He believes government bonds and Treasury bills could be represented as digital tokens purchased through online platforms, particularly by Chinese and American investors.

Ebenezer Ghanney considers government securities relatively easy products to tokenise because the necessary market structures and custody arrangements already exist. He presented the approach at the Africa Virtual Assets Summit in Accra, according to MyJoyOnline.

The WeWire executive nevertheless stressed that regulatory oversight is necessary to strengthen confidence in these digital financial products. He said his company's participation in the Ghana Securities and Exchange Commission's regulatory sandbox allows it to test its products under supervision before a wider launch, MyJoyOnline reports.
