President John Dramani Mahama announced the expansion of emergency units at four major Ghanaian hospitals and the acquisition of 100 ambulances. Work is due to begin in 2027, while the military critical care hospital is now admitting civilians, according to 3News.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama announced on Friday 6 November that the Armed Forces Critical Care and Emergency Hospital would open to civilians, as well as the strengthening of emergency capacity at four major hospitals. Work is due to begin in 2027, he said at the 68th annual conference of the Ghana Medical Association in Miotso.
The extensions will concern Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital and 37 Military Hospital, with the aim of reserving at least 10% of their operational beds for emergencies. At Korle Bu, capacity would rise from 65 to at least 150 beds, with additional staff, oxygen and medical equipment, according to John Dramani Mahama.
The government also plans to acquire 100 ambulances for the National Ambulance Service and spare parts to return 100 currently broken-down vehicles to service. John Dramani Mahama said 200 million Ghanaian cedis had been allocated in the 2027 budget to support these measures.
