A new compressed natural gas (CNG) station has been inaugurated in Abuja to increase motorists' refuelling options and support lower transport costs, according to Temitope Fashedemi, permanent secretary of the Nigerian presidency. The site, located on Saint George Akume Way in Karu, was developed by the Nigerian presidency, the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles Pi-CNG & EV, and Rolling Energy Ltd.
The station resulted from the rehabilitation of a former State House petroleum facility, converted into an integrated CNG refuelling and vehicle conversion centre. Rolling Energy financed the work and installed the equipment, while the presidency provided the site, allowing it to be renovated without direct public expenditure, according to Temitope Fashedemi.
The permanent secretary said the project was intended to encourage private investment in CNG infrastructure. The presidency has also acquired about 10 hybrid vehicles and uses hybrid shuttle buses in the Presidential Villa, he said.
The opening follows the announced deployment of 106 CNG stations in Nigeria, financed by $2.6 billion in private investment, as part of the expansion of the national compressed natural gas refuelling network.
