Three Angolan civil society organisations have asked the attorney general to open an investigation into the electoral register and the Ministry of Territorial Administration’s management of the process. They also want an audit and checks for possible deceased voters still registered, according to Folha 8.

Three Angolan non-governmental organisations, HANDEKA, UYELE and MOSAICO, petitioned the attorney general on Friday to request a judicial investigation into the electoral register and the responsibility of the Ministry of Territorial Administration, headed by Daniel Félix Neto, Jornal F8 reports.

The NGOs are notably calling for an investigation into the possible continued inclusion in the database of adult citizens of deceased people. They are also demanding an independent audit of the database and its computer file, as well as a financial audit of expenditure related to the proof-of-life operation conducted by the ministry.

The organisations say they have sought explanations since June about automatic voter registration, in preparation for the general elections scheduled for 2027. They accuse the ministry of failing to respond after more than four months and are asking Minister Daniel Félix Neto to respond within the legal deadlines to the requests submitted by civil society.

The initiative comes as UNITA denounces flaws in Angola’s voter registration. It also comes amid internal tensions within the MPLA, Angola’s ruling party, whose leadership candidate Higino Carneiro could challenge his exclusion from the leadership race on 22 October.
