The Durban High Court has authorised the South African movement March and March to resume its demonstrations on 7 November, but has ordered it to suspend them during next week’s local elections, SABC News reports. The gatherings must take place between 9am and 3pm.
Judge Peter Olson ordered that the demonstrations remain peaceful and banned violence, intimidation, looting, damage to property, carrying weapons and covering faces. Police had sought a two-week suspension, citing the need to deploy officers to ensure public safety and protect the elections.
March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma urged supporters to respect the court’s decision and turn out in large numbers at the polls. The parties must return to court on 18 January to present arguments on a final order.
