Dozens of Cameroonian families protested outside the Russian embassy in Yaoundé on Wednesday, demanding the repatriation of the bodies of relatives who died fighting in Ukraine, BBC News Afrique reports. The protesters are also seeking news of young people recruited by the Russian army, some of whom have been out of contact with their families for several months.
The families denounce pro-Russian clandestine networks that allegedly recruit young Cameroonians by promising them student visas, well-paid civilian jobs or administrative regularisation. The widow of a fighter told BBC News Afrique that she had not heard from her husband for nine months. He left Cameroon for Russia in February through a recruitment network, she said.
Ngong Sandjoumbi, who learned of his son’s death, is also demanding the return of his body. The protest was called by the “Bring Back Our Sons and Brothers” collective outside the Russian diplomatic mission in the Bastos district of Yaoundé.
