UNITA has reported problems with electoral registration and the issuing of identity cards to Angolan Justice Minister Marcy Lopes ahead of the 2027 election. The opposition party cited uncovered areas, unidentified mobile teams and possible unequal treatment of voters, according to its vice-president Álvaro Chikwamanga Daniel.
UNITA, Angola’s main opposition party, has reported problems with electoral registration and the issuing of national identity cards, saying they could limit participation in the 2027 general election. The concerns were presented on 22 October to Angola’s Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Marcy Lopes, by a delegation led by the party’s vice-president, Álvaro Chikwamanga Daniel, according to Jornal F8.
The party says some areas are not covered by civil registration and electoral registration operations. It also reports unidentified mobile civil registration teams in several provinces, a situation that is causing confusion among citizens and raising fears of unequal treatment of voters, according to Álvaro Chikwamanga Daniel, quoted by Jornal F8.
Registration of citizens aged 18 or over has been under way since 15 June ahead of the 2027 vote. The authorities aim to register more than 16.7 million people by 31 March 2027, while the national identity card is to serve as the voting document. The UNITA delegation also proposed measures to reduce risks associated with the process, according to Jornal F8.
The move comes after UNITA called for two ballot papers in Angola’s 2027 election on 14 October. This latest warning concerns the practical conditions for voter registration ahead of the same election.
