Sudanese Justice Minister Abdullah Darf said that changing Article 42 of the penal code concerned diya, compensation paid as blood money, previously set at 330,000 pounds. The 2020 amendment removed the Supreme Court president’s power to determine its amount, according to Bajnews.

Sudanese Justice Minister Abdullah Darf said the amendment to Article 42 of the penal code, concerning diya, had removed the authority of the head of the judiciary to set its amount. He was speaking in a circular reported by Baj News.

Before the amendment adopted in 2020, diya was set at 330,000 Sudanese pounds. The change was introduced by Temporary Decree No. 7, which also concerned Article 42 of the Sudanese penal code, according to the minister.
