Malawian company Sky Energy launched 100 electric taxis, 40 public charging stations and a booking app in Lilongwe on Friday evening, Nyasa Times reports. The company plans to open bookings on 1 December 2026, as Malawi faces fuel shortages. Its managing director, Schizzo Thomson, presented the system as combining vehicles, charging stations and a digital platform.
The Sky E-Ride app will allow users to book journeys in electric cars and will notably offer ride-sharing. Malawi imports all its petrol and diesel, while electricity can be produced locally through hydropower, solar power and other renewable energy sources, Thomson said.
Sky Energy was founded in 2015 in response to power cuts that lasted up to 12 hours in some areas. Since then, the company has developed solar installations and battery-storage capacity for businesses, institutions and households. Its development director, Hastings Golosi, presented the app as a platform intended to connect passengers, drivers and businesses.
The launch delivers the project for 100 electric taxis and 300 jobs in Malawi, presented by Sky Energy on 30 October.
