Airtel Malawi has committed 22.6 million kwacha to support digital learning and cybersecurity education in Malawi, Nyasa Times reports. The funding includes 10 million kwacha for the National Cyber Security Conference.
The operator will also provide 4G routers and a year of unlimited internet access to 20 university students. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) selected the beneficiaries from members of the five best teams in the national cybersecurity competition, which involved students from 15 universities. They include students at Mzuzu University, the University of Malawi and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
MACRA Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma said internet access would enable students to learn more about digital technologies and cybersecurity issues. The initiative comes as Malawi plans to connect 2,000 schools to the internet, according to an announcement published on 29 October.
