São Tomé and Príncipe’s private sector is calling for funding to adapt trade, production and tourism to the effects of climate change. These demands are to inform the national adaptation plan, which includes measures to protect the coast, biodiversity, health and tourism, according to Telanon.

Businesses in São Tomé and Príncipe are calling for better access to funding to adapt to the effects of climate change, Telanon reports. The request was made at a workshop on the national climate adaptation plan, which is in its final drafting phase.

The secretary-general of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture and Services, Celso d’Apresentação, identified funding as the main challenge, as businesses are experiencing an increasing loss of their own capital. The plan’s coordinator, Victor Bonfim, highlighted the risks to trade, production and tourism.

The plan includes measures on biodiversity, coastal protection, rising temperatures, health and tourism. Funded by the Green Climate Fund, it is due to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2027 and is part of the 2026–2040 national development strategy.

The businesses’ request adds to steps São Tomé and Príncipe has already taken on climate finance: the country launched a call for tenders to fund climate action on 16 October, after calling for greater climate justice at the UN on 30 September (the climate action call for tenders, the call for climate justice at the UN).
