In several neighbourhoods of Lagos, public drains are being used to carry wastewater and sewage, according to Premium Times. A photograph taken in Itafaji, on Lagos Island, shows wastewater flowing through an open channel along Braimoh-Igbo Street.

In Lagos, several residential buildings discharge their wastewater and sewage directly into public drains, exposing residents to health risks despite the practice being prohibited by Nigerian environmental laws, Premium Times reports.

Observations in several neighbourhoods of Lagos Island showed that drains intended for water drainage are also being used as channels for domestic wastewater. The situation was observed notably along Braimoh-Igbo Street, in the Itafaji neighbourhood, according to Premium Times.
