Kampala authorities rescued 114 children living on the streets on Friday evening, including 82 girls and 32 boys, during an operation in the Ugandan capital, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) announced. The children are to be transferred to Masulita Children’s Village, in Wakiso district, for support before being reintegrated into school and their communities.
The KCCA said the operation was continuing in different parts of Kampala to place the children in safer conditions. According to the municipal authority, some had spent several days and nights on the streets looking for food and trying to survive, reports Daily Monitor.
Children from other parts of Uganda are drawn to Kampala by promises of employment and better living conditions before ending up on the streets, according to Daily Monitor. In September, the KCCA repatriated at least 200 children to Napaka district as part of operations targeting child trafficking and exploitation. On 8 September, its executive director Sharifah Buzeki called on district authorities to strengthen family reunification, protection, education and reintegration measures.
